Gregg L. Semenza is a recipient of the 2019 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine and Professor of Genetic Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He is internationally recognized as one of the leading scientists studying how cells sense and adapt to changes in oxygen availability. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for discoveries of the molecular mechanisms that enable cells to detect and respond to oxygen levels, including the identification of HIF-1, a key regulator of this process. He obtained his Habilitation to Direct Research (HDR) in Computer Science from the University of Montpellier, France, in 2009, and currently heads the Data Science Group at SDU’s IT School. His research focuses on data-driven approaches for near-real-time Big Data analytics, with applications in areas such as urban mobility and smart cities, including information aggregation and dissemination and traffic congestion prediction. His research interests also encompass recommendation systems and approaches to combating fake content.
